Friday 5 - Gestures

It is Friday, yay!  I am on Day Two of my Four Day weekend.  So far, it has been pretty non-productive, but I am still enjoying myself.  I don't have a great need to be productive ALL the time ;-)  So...how about some Friday 5 for day 2 of 4?  Great!  Feel free to join in the good times.  That's right, dangit, the good times!

1. What are your thoughts on “air quotes?”  The ruling on "air quotes" is - to be used ironically or for comic effect only.  Any other use constitutes douchery and you will be disqualified.

2. If you are the sort to flip someone the bird, what were the circumstances surrounding your most recent flip? If you’re not that type, have you ever, ever used that gesture?  I am not a big bird flipper.  It is kind of a silly gesture.  For genuine anger, I much prefer the Mafiosa type punchy fist bicep grab thing...knowhatimean?  Either that, or the Geller double fist hit.  That one is awesome.  Um., anyway I'm pretty sure the last time I flipped someone the bird was when I was just goofing off with DR.  He probably said something non-complimentary about Nurse Jackie or something...

3.  What’s a gesture you’ve made up, or what’s a gesture made up by (and shared with) your friends or family?  I honestly can't think of anything we've actually made up.  We aren't that clever I guess.  But we are very monkey-like in that we can imitate brilliantly!  Anyone worth knowing is way into calling someone a chicken by using one of the super "chicken" variations devised by the Bluths.

 4. Are there any gestures that have specific, unique meanings in your workplace?  Nah, but we do tend to use the universal finger-circling-the-temple-to-indicate-craziness a LOT.  But don't worry...we are completely discreet about it.  It is just, you know, you get a few wack jobs in the library.  It is just one of those things.

5. Have you ever received an anonymous gesture of kindness or affection?  Hmmm... I guess on this one I will mention how happy it makes me when someone on the road gives me the go ahead wave or the  thank you wave when there is some merging or pulling out stuff going on.  It always sort of restores my faith in humanity.

I hope you all have a weekend full of kind gestures and good laughs.  As for me, I have a community college graduation to get through tonight for young Princess Diva.  So wish us luck navigating a stadium filled with the family and friends of about 500 graduates.  *sigh*  Why am I now imaging lots of birds in my future? ;-)

1. Air quotes? Do people still do that?
2. I sometimes find myself flipping the bird while driving, or while"getting something out of my eye" while talking to my husband and even once "got something out of my eye" at my son, across the room, at church.
3. Ahhh, the Bluths. Chocolate covered frozen bananas, anyone?
4. At work I do a lot of pretend poking my eye outs.
5. Road kindnesses also make me happy - even bringing tears to my eyes.

Congrats to the young Princess Diva!

1. I agree - used for irony only.

2. I hate to admit it but I occasionally flip someone off. Driving. Or jokingly to my ex, a carry-over from our married days.

3. Lots of silly walks and dance moves.

4. Pretend shooting a gun at our own temples.

5. Yes, Absolutely.

1. I rarely use "air quotes", but I agree that they should only be used for comic effect or sarcasm.

2. I have flipped people the bird behind their backs (especially former managers who have said stupid things), but the last time I deliberately made sure the person saw "the finger" was way back in junior high during Summer break. Some kid was being a jerk to me and my friend.

3.Well I know that whenever one of our family members says something that sounds condescending or they are patronizing us, we do make gestures (not "the finger") that mocks their attitude. Most of it involves us saying, "Ah duhhhhh!" Hehe.

4. The funny thing about this is that there is a guy at work who will come up to the front desk to tell me he's going to lunch. He makes his fingers into the letter "L" and puts it up to his forehead. He doesn't realize that's the sign for "Loser". Lol. A few of us recognize this and we laugh at it everytime.

5. Yes, I've received a few in the past, but most gestures of affection or kindness are from people I know, and those are welcomed too!

C4C: Hi! I love the subtle, just scratching my nose, birds :-) Who gets to see you do the eye poke at work? Kids, colleagues, or both?

Secret: Oooohhh, nothing like a silly walk or dance move!
I think people at my work can appreciate the gun to the temple move as well :-)

Tara: bwahahaha! I love that a guy at work doesn't recognize the loser sign! Classic.

I'm a bird flipper, but mostly it's just to be silly with my friends than any real angry gesture.

Churlita: I think maybe too many birds have been flipped in the world for it to be taken seriously anymore :-)

I am def not into flipping the bird. It is sooo negative. But gestures can be great especially when one is telling a story...

Have you ever done the double finger finger point for emphasis. It really gives weight to whatever you are saying. Don't just use the index finger, add the middle finger, and your story/point will achieve greater gravitas.
