Ah, back to the salt mines after a long weekend. In some ways, it is more pleasant being at work right now, because the air conditioning is divine. It has been so hot here! Like ridiculously hot, like 100°+ hot…and on top of that disgustingly humid. Every moment of the weekend, baring total immersion in the pool, was spent experiencing the sensation of sweat running profusely from every pore. We don’t have central air in my house, and even if we did, I couldn’t afford to run it…although I would at this point, money be damned – haha! Anyway, it was incredibly gross no matter how I tried to spin it in my mind. The little laundry room was like a sauna, so I was trying to tell myself that I was undergoing a purification ritual. I wanted to make all that sweat into a good thing! Yeah, nice try.
I don’t mean to make it sound like all I did for three days was sweat…but that is sort of how it feels. I did have a nice lunch yesterday with my mom and some of the kids in a cool restaurant (okay, it was Burger King, but it was cool!) We actually spent a good portion of time in the pool and I recognize that we are lucky there. Also, the nights were not too bad. It didn’t cool off much, but once we all retire to our rooms, shut the doors, and turn on our own little swamp coolers, it was somewhat bearable.
Still, it is pretty sad when you are sort of thrilled to back to work just for the physical comforts it provides. Oh, plus, I know workplace refrigerators have a bad reputation for being raided by others, but my food never disappears here as it does at home! So there is another reason to get back to work. Not to mention the deep satisfaction I get from…blah, blah, blah…you buying that?
So…how’s the weather? Are you too, too hot?

It has been absolutely gorgeous here for a week. The skies are crystal clear, the humidity is low, and the sun is bright.
Evil-E: As if I didn't have reason enough before...one more reason to envy the Evil One's gig over there!
There's nothing wrong with Burger King!! :) Stay cool!
Your description of the humidity is very evocative. I would hate that kind of weather. Fortunately, here the weather has been quite good for once - sunny enough to wear T shirts but cool when the sun goes in: there have been clouds but no rain. So I've taken the kids out to local woods and parks for the last few days before school begins.
I agree with Evil-E, it has been beautiful here. Sun, sun, sun. It was humid yesterday and I heard it'll be humid today, too, but it's still nice.
I had never heard of those swamp coolers before!
Stepping: haha! Thanks for not calling me out on that :-)
I will try and stay cool.
FW: I usually don't mind heat, but yeah, the humidity is extemely unpleasant. Your weather sounds perfect, lucky!
Tara: Jealous, jealous, jealous!
Swamp coolers are good when it is more desert-y hot and they are much cheaper to run than air conditioners. Right now, they aren't so very great...
I grew up in Arizona with nothing but a swamp cooler.
Last year, we got central air for the first time. We hardly ever use it.
Churlita: Yes, they are good in places like AZ where it is hot and dry. I would love to have central air when it is like this, but seriously, the cost of running it would kill me.
