I'm just getting ready to go in and do a storytime and I am suddenly feeling anxious. It isn't about storytime...I don't think it is about work at all. I'm not sure what it is. Lawd, I hate when this happens! I am pretty noted for my calmness and pronounced lack of that weird nervous energy that some people give off. Still, I have these moments and they feel like doom.

Take it easy, just chill....
I hate the feeling of "the dread", I can be all set to go, all organized, all calm..and bam it hits me like a safe.
You could try a few things:
1) Stop for a moment and take a couple of good, deep breaths.
2) Say "I'm excited. Not anxious." (sometimes this helps, I learned it it in an oral communication class one time)
3) Try to dissect why you're anxious.
4) See #1. Lather, rinse and repeat.
I hate when that happens. I would say to picture your audience in their underwear but since they are children that might hint of something gross and illegal.
Evil-E: Thank you, I did feel calmer pretty quickly. Glad to know I'm not the only one with the occasional feelinging of dread.
Tara: Those are great tips! I do try really hard to focus on where particular feelings are actually coming from. In this case, I think I was really helped just by writing my anxiety down.
Rachel: haha! Yeah, that would be a little weird in this case, although it is certainly effective for some gatherings.
