I would take the year off at regular pay. During that year I would use the time to improve myself so that I could do a different job with more pay!
I am actually going to answer both, but in different scenarios. A year or two ago, I would have said I would take a year off at regular pay. I was working in less-than-stellar companies that frustrated me and offered me no future. However, now I would keep working for double pay. That's because I absolutely love where I work and I enjoy my work. So I guess my final answer would be WORKING FOR DOUBLE PAY.
Notice something...I never once mentioned that money as the reason for either answer.
That's a tough one. I love the idea of a paid year off. Especially since I don't get any paid time off as a self-employed person. But I'm going with working for a year at double pay, and here's why: I'd take the the extra amount and put it directly into my retirement account (the maximum allowed)/paying down my mortgage. Then I'll let it accrue interest and be able to retire earlier and with more money. That's way, I'd get more than a year off from the same amount of money. Short-term sacrifice, long-term gain.
I'd love a paid year off! I'm happy with my income right now, but it would be nice to relax and do some fun things, especially in a warmer climate.
The year off, without a doubt. I'd roll the dice on a book and hope for the best :)
Year off. Boring job. Need time for things that make me happy creatively. Paid AND time? Travel, baby.

Everyone: I am very much enjoying everyone's defenses for this particular question! There really is a lot to consider. Right now we have 2 who'd work that year for double pay and 4 who'd take that year off at regular pay...2-4. I'd love to hear from more of you! Join the discussion :)
I ran this by a guy I've been talking to during a phone conversation and he went with the paid year off because he is actually looking for another job within his company, But then, into the conversation, realized I meant he'd get double pay if he stayed (he thought I mean work twice as much during that year). He mulled it over a while longer, but ultimately decided that at this particular time, he'd go with the year off. So I guess it really boils down to how much you like your job at the time of the offer.
Secret: I think that is quite true. I know that for myself, I would choose to work for double pay. The money would make a difference in my life exponentially...and I like my job!
I would take the year off as long as I had money to take advantage of it! Otherwise, double pay please.
