Here I Am in This Uniformish, Pant-Suit Sort of Thing

Choose and Defend Wednesday is here and with it comes your chance to speak your mind and set the record straight! Or you know...you could just talk about your favorite cereal. It varies.  Today, I have had art on my mind. So, I thought, what kind of an art question could I ask? There is so much art! So many mediums, so many apples and oranges situations. Given that, I decided to narrow things down as best I could to a couple of iconic paintings. We can compare them, Choose a favorite and then Defend your choice.

Let me ask it this way...which of these paintings do you enjoy the most?

Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci (c. 1503-1506)
OR

Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh (1889)

There couldn't be anything much more subjective than your own enjoyment of any work of art. So be bold and state your opinion! I'd welcome any other thoughts you have about art and artists...what you might enjoy creating or just what you might enjoy experiencing.

Choose and Defend, you little artiste, you!

Van Gogh's Starry Night is a beautiful work of art. I can sit and stare at this piece for hours and find something new all the time. I also prefer landscapes to portraits. STARRY NIGHT is my answer.

Starry Night. In my old home, we had a poster of it in one of the bathrooms. I love the peaceful look of it. And I actually don't like paintings of people in my home. I don't want someone looking back at me.

It's Starry Night for me too. Van Gogh's art is so easy on the eye to look at. I like Klimt, Hundertwasser and Modigliani too.

Jasen: It is beautiful and quite hynotic, isn't it. One for Starry Night.

Secret: haha! The eyes! THE EYES! I totally get that. Two for Starry Night.

FW: Very nice choices. I am a huge Hundertwasser fan, too. Three for Starry Night.

Everyone: Another participant (@Twindy5) voted on Twitter. She mentioned some of her favorite art, including a variation on the Mona Lisa. So One for Mona Lisa :) That makes it 1-3, with Starry Night leading the lovely way. Anyone else want to talk art? I'd love to hear it.

Starry night! Much more room for interpretation.

I'm going to surprise myself and go with Leonardo, assuming a desert island kind of scenario. My logic here is similar to being stuck for years with a single favorite novel (let's say Slaughter-House Five) or the Bible. I'm not a Bible fan, but its density would hold up to years of rereading better than my dear friend Billy Pilgrim would.

And so it goes with Mona. From composition to color theory to brush strokes, there's more to decipher in Leonardo's masterpiece than the Van Gogh that on the surface I appreciate more.

Or something like that.

NoRegrets: I can follow that train of thought :) Four for Starry Night.

James: I like that sort of big picture, long term thinking. It isn't always about immediate gratification, is it. I also appreciate putting the other, very worthy dog, into this fight! Thanks :) One for Mona Lisa

Now we have it at 1-4, with Starry Night leading Mona Lisa.

Oh, Starry Night! It's such an imaginative and ethereal piece. The Mona Lisa has always struck me as a bit overbilled.

BB: Overbilled :) I like that. Five for Starry Night.

Starry Night shall not be defeated it seems!
