Just Remember, You Are What You Feel

Welcome to another Choose and Defend Wednesday. I thought today would be a good day for a music oriented Choose and Defend, in honor of my guest post over at James' awesome blog - Why It Matters.

Here is the deal...you are musically talented. Good for you! Now, you are never going to be Paul McCartney or even Joe Newman. Still you can make a good living in the music industry. But how? Well, here comes the choice. Would you prefer to be...

A Session Musician
OR

A Songwriter

I know that you are so talented and amazing that you could do both! Or even more! But since this is Choose and Defend, you must Choose...and then you must Defend your choice.

All that's left to do is for you to explain how you're going to make your mark in the world of music. Feel free to include as much detail as you wish :) Choose and Defend!

Since I am learning to play the bass guitar, I think I would like to be a session musician. At age 39, I don't think it's feasible for me to be a superstar musician. I can however, be a jam musician or a session player. SESSION MUSICIAN is my final answer.

I think I'd have to go with songwriter. I enjoy making things and I can't read music, which is important for a session musician.

I want to be a session musician. I'd love to learn how to play an instrument like guitar, drums or piano.

I'm going with Songwriter because I would want to use that as a way to express myself. It would be living hand to mouth I am sure, but I think it would be worth it. :)

Interesting question! Session musicians don't have any choice about what they are used for. They often don't get credited properly. Due to the lack of choice with that option, I'm going with songwriter. Because even if I wasn't a success in my own lifetime, perhaps some part of me would live on through my songs and I would have complete creative freedom. So yep, songwriter I will be!

I'd rather be a session musician. I think I'd enjoy playing more than I would writing songs.

Forget that creativity stuff, I'll take session musician.

Jasen: I always like that "gun for hire" feel that I associate with session players. One for Session Musician.

James: Don't let a little thing like not being able to do something slow you down when you are Choosing and Defending :) But I bet you'd be a natural songwriter. One for Songwriter.

Tara: Wouldn't that be so much fun? I can totally see you seated behind a big drum kit :) Two for Session Musician.

Annie: So many things are risky...and so many things aren't worth the risk. I think having a job that felt fulfilling and creative would be a great risk. Two for Songwriter.

FW: I have heard of many cases where session players did not feel properly compensated or credited.
And I like the idea that something you've written could be a great legacy. Three for Songwriter.

Secret: You have a jump, already being a musician. I imagine you'd be very in demand. Three for Session Musician.

3GK: haha! I like that! Just tell me where to show up and what to do, and I'm good. Totally get that. Four for Session Musician.

Everyone: Your answers have been so intersting and fun to read! Love the different points of view. We have a close race right now of 4-3, with Session Musician leading Songwriter by a single vote. Anyone else is welcome to join in!

Not me! I'm not a musician at all - just dod the obligatory band thing in high school. It's my boys who are musicians.

Secret: Compared someone (like me) who never learned to read music and never had a single lesson on an instrument, YOU are a musician :)
