You Don't Know How Lovely You Are

Hey. Ho. For this week's Choose and Defend Wednesday you get to be a scientist. Or maybe just someone looking in the right place at the right time. Who knows? In any event, this week you get to make a discovery all your own. Given the choice, which of these discoveries would you prefer to make and why?

A New Comet
OR

A New Dinosaur Fossil

Imagine either of these things, completely undiscovered before, and then you announce your find! You probably even get to name whatever it is you've found! What will it be? That is the Choose part. And if you can explain your preference, that would be the Defend part.

Thanks for stopping in and noticing that I am in a better frame of mind mid-week :) Choose and Defend!

I would rather have a comet named after me. I am more into astronomy than archaeology. I find comets to be completely beautiful. Also, it might crash into a planet and make a really big show. A COMET, definitely.

When I was a kid I loved dinosaurs so I'm going to go with discovering a new dinosaur fossil.

I'm gonna choose "a new dinosaur fossil" to make my dad proud. He always liked searching in the Metroparks for fossils.

However, I'd like the fossil to be named the Tara-saurus of the Mesozoic period or something.

I'm going to take the vanity route here. If I discovered a new comet then likely its orbit is so long that I'd never get to see Comet Wimbot come back around and revel in the glory of my discovery.

On the other hand, if I discovered a new fossil I could immediately name the extinct beast Wimbotticus Rex and enjoy my new found fame. Hooray me! Look at Wimbotticus on the cover of National Geographic!

A new comet. Because it means I'm looking up! :-)

I go fossil. I'll donate to a museum where it can be on show all year round for school visits. The gift shop can sell keyrings and postcards of it. The scientists and artists can predict what the dinosaur looked like. It could be the star of another Jurassic Park film. I might secure funding to become a dinosaur fossil hunter full time. Yep, it would be more of a life changer than another comet!

I want a comet! It would pass frightfully close to earth without doing much more than disturbing the weather and tides... but enough for people to say "Phew! I thought we were goners for sure. That Silly comet came awfully close!"

Unless I get to visit the comet, maybe to heroically alter it's path of impending doom to the Earth, I'll go with discovering a new dinosaur. Going for the whole hands on thing. And something people can look at every day, rather than every 73 years or so.

Comet - it makes your teeth turn green;
Comet - it tastes like gasoline;
Comet - it makes you vomit;
So take some Comet and vomit today!

Jasen: I am not surprised to hear this. I'm sure AlienCG Comet would be spectacular! One for Comet.

Silver: That is an excellent reason! One for Dinosaur.

Tara: Aw, that is really nice. And I think the Tarasaurus sounds adorable :) I mean, fearsome..yeah, bloodthirsty! Two for Dinosaur.

James: Hooray you! I can only imagine what the Wimbotticus Rex would be like. Surely it would possess a great sense of irony and a flair for the creative. Three for Dinosaur.

NoRegrets: A very fine thought :) Two for Comet.

FW: Oh, I like the way your mind works! This find has become a full fledged Furtive Wangler industry! Four for Dinosaur.

Silly: hee hee! That Silly Comet :) It would be fun to be a force to be reckoned with! Three for Comet.

3GK: Hands on, that's good. What do you think...Knightasaurus? Five for Dinosaur.

Dmarks: Looks like the jingle is the winner here! haha! Why not? Four for Comet.

Everyone: This is a cool, close race, with a score of 4-5. Discovering a comet with just one less vote than discovering a new dinosaur fossil. I love all the great reasons too! Anyone else want to discover something?

Is it too late for me to weigh in? Because I'm going to vote for a comet. It was close, because I also find archaeology fascinating but I have a lovely memory of the time when the Hale-Bopp comet was passing through and it was so clearly visible, night after night. I used to stand out on the deck, nursing my baby and watching it in the night sky. Magic.

Secret: Of course it is not too late! Nice to see you. That does sound like a magical memory and a good defense :) Five for Comet

And now we have a tie at 5-5! How exciting! Tie breaker out there?
