I Shoulda Learned to Play Them Drums

It is Wednesday which can mean only one thing here in Fresh Hell....it is time to Choose and Defend. This week, you get a new job. Yay! Well, maybe not yay, exactly. It isn't a spectacular job, but it pays pretty well, you have a pleasant working environment, and you are fully able to do or learn all aspects of your new position. And guess what? Since this is Choose and Defend Wednesday you even get a choice. There's a twist for you :)   You get to decide what sort of work you'd prefer to do, to a degree....

Would you rather

Work Exclusively with Co-Workers

 OR

Work with the Public
I'm really interested to hear which you'd choose and why. This is your Choose and Defend Wednesday. Go!

I'm going with co-workers. As a shrink, I've worked primarily with the public for twenty or so years and I'm ready for something different.

At this moment, I'll choose to work exclusively with my coworkers. I kind of know what makes them tick, and we seem to understand each other. With the public...it's an exhausting, mixed bag sometimes.

Call me strange, but I like working with the public. I get kind of bored dealing with the same people everyday.

I think ifit's a brand new job then a change would do me good. So I'd go for working with the public on the basis that it would be a big change and something I haven't done before.

I've done both, and I'll take coworkers. Every person in the public is a variable. Is she happy? Sad? Rude? Is that dude upset or just in a hurry? Just how much baggage is he or she bringing to this interaction?

At least with coworkers one eventually gets them dialed in. Bob is a jerk and Jane is a people pleaser, etc. The consistency is manageable. Not knowing what you're going to get from person to person? Not so much.

Secret: I hear you. I haven't had a non-public job, ever! One for Co-workers.

Tara: Absolutely true. You can never hope to get a handle on so many different people. Two for Co-workers.

Silver: No, no, I totally get it! It can be fun interacting with new folks :) One for Public.

NoRegrets: bwahahaha! So true :) Three for Co-workers.

FW: Oh, interesting! I am the opposite, having never worked in a non-public service job. You seem like you'd be great at dealing with people. Two for Public.

James: You've hit the nail on the head, for sure. There is a lot more control in any situation when the other participants are known quantities. Four for Co-workers.

Everyone: Right now we are at 4-2, with more of you prefering to deal with only your co-workers. I'd like to hear from more people, so if you haven't had a chance to say your piece, please do!

Hmm, tough call, but I am going to have to say CO-WORKERS. I've dealt with the public in the past and while it was okay in some places, it sucked horribly in others. Co-workers can be dealt with if they get out of hand. So, I say CO-WORKERS.

Jasen: It truly is a mixed bag. Dealt with...yes! :) Five for Co-workers.

Co-workers, no question. The public are rude, uninformed, and imbecilic. My co-workers, on the other hand, rock, and even if they didn't a few bad co-workers are nothing compared to hundreds of random idiots.

BB: haha! You must have met the worst of the public at some point. I have found some people to be lovely :) But I agree that co-workers are easier to manage. Six for Co-workers.

We're now at 6-2...apparently not many of you enjoy working with the public :)
