And Mom and Dad Can Hardly Wait For School to Start Again

Let us have a merry little Choose and Defend Wednesday, shall we? It is the time of the season for Christmas decorations, Christmas songs, Christmas movies. It doesn't really matter if you actually celebrate Christmas yourself, either religiously or culturally, it is everywhere!

So, I thought I'd take this moment to discuss Christmas movies.  Well...not many. Since this is Choose and Defend, we will discuss exactly two Christmas movies :)

Which of these ubiquitous holiday gems to you prefer (Choose) and why (Defend)?

A Christmas Story
OR

It's a Wonderful Life

They each have their good and bad points to be sure. Let's hear what you think. Choose and Defend.  And, as always, feel free to include additonal information about any other holiday movies you may enjoy or not enjoy :)

"You'll shoot your eye out." Being from Cleveland, I am partial to A Christmas Story since it was filmed here (It's set in a suburb of Chicago and the Parkers live on Cleveland Street). However, I also like it because I like the storyline of the movie in that you see the world between the eyes of the child. A CHRISTMAS STORY.

Easy. "It's a Wonderful Life." I actually have mixed feelings about the movie (I hate that they showed that Mary would have become a lonely old woman without her husband. She was beautiful and funny and kind - could have had any man at all.) But I LOATHE "A Christmas Story." Couldn't watch the whole thing, I hated it so much. The only ending that would have been acceptable to me was some catastrophic event, like a meteor or a nuclear holocaust, that would have killed all those despicable people. Sadly, that didn't happen.

I'll go "A Christmas Story," if for no other reason than the complete incongruity of the guy who directed "Porky's" making such a great film.

And for this same reason I'm a big fan of Frank Capra's "Porky's II: Porky's Revenge."

Definitely "A Christmas Story". It makes me smile and laugh. The father kind of reminds me of my dad, and I love the "oh fudge" scene and the family waking up on Christmas morning.

I've seen It's A Wonderful Life a good few times now and know it fairly well. It's a great cast and a classic Christmas film. I had to watch a trailer for A Christmas Story to see if I remembered it, sadly no but it looks like a fun film that would make me laugh - it doesn't seem too sentimental, which is a bad trait of these kind of films. However, sSince I've only seen one of these, I'm going to have to go with IAWL.

I don't even think about "It's a Wonderful Life" every year. Luckily, I don't think about myself having never been born.
However, if "A Christmas Story" is still on 24 hours in a row, it will be turned to at all parts of the day, laughed at, quoted, and enjoyed by all of the people who watch it. That's what I think about every year.

Jasen: I didn't know that was filmed in Cleveland! I agree that it is fun to see things from a child's view :) One for A Christmas Story.

Secret: I completely agree about Mary and her sad future without George. Surely not! But there is certainly no ambiguity in your choice and defense this week :) One for It's a Wonderful Life.

James: ha! I guess Bob Clark could have gone a whole 'nother way with that bunny suit...but he did, after all, stick with his source material :) Two for A Christmas Story.

Tara: He really is a certain dad...that gruff but loving guy :) I think hearing the narration from the grown up Ralphie is one of the funniest things. Three for A Christmas Story.

FW: That's interesting. Here in the U.S. it is nearly impossible to NOT know it. It has become a tradition for one of the basic cable networks (TBS) to air it for 24 hours straight on Christmas Day. Two for It's a Wonderful Life.

Cindy: I have a line or two from IaWL, but more from CS for sure. I always think that if I'd never been born the world would surely carry on beautifully without me :) Four for A Christmas Story.

I actually did not grow up with A Christmas Story, so I vote for It's a Wonderful Life.
