The Squalor of Rentals Aside

Hear ye, hear ye! The time has come to speak of all things ABUNDANT! It is time for some Saturday Scavenger Shots representing a fun word choosen by one Silly Rabbit @ Down Silly Rabbit's Hole

What do have around me that is ABUNDANT? Well....lots of things, naturally :)

First of all, I want to take a moment to wish a Happy Birthday to my oldest son, Audie Kick Back Dude!

Today I have a 27 year old son. What? That can't be right. Yet it is :)  His good qualities are ABUNDANT. To look at it selfishly, his birth made me a mom. My joys, ever since, have been ABUNDANT!  Happy Birthday!!!

Let's see...ABUNDANT...what else?

Here is DR surveying an ABUNDANT display of cheeses. So much cheesy goodness. Just one of our common interests.

What is the most ABUNDANT thing surrounding me?

Love, of course! I give it, I get it, it is ABUNDANT.

I hope your August is a month of ABUNDANT joys.  Can't wait to see some other ABUNDANT posts and can't wait to see who Silly Rabbit tags for next week!

Keep on Swingin'

Yesterday evening my friend Ceku and I attended our fourth Chris Isaak and the Silvertones concert. Well, she's seen them more than four times...but it was the fourth summer in a row that we've gone to a Chris Isaak concert together.

The venue was excellent. We went to the Grove in Anaheim and it was set up dinner theater style. They did, in fact, serve dinner up until a half hour before the show started at 8 pm. The food was quite lovely. I am a poor person who doesn't go to fancy eateries, so it seemed expensive to me, but it really wasn't at all out of line or anything.  I ended up getting this beautiful little platter of soft cheeses, proscuitto, those little dried breads, and an apple. It came with a sampler of Firestone beers including a Pale Ale, Double Barreled, and Port. Plus, a nice heavy Firestone glass to keep.  Perfect.

The dinner theater seating was also fun because it was very easy and natural to visit with your tablemates.  We sat with two very nice men, who may or may not have been a couple. They were so friendly and nice.  Right before the show a couple of other groups arrived at the table. There was an older couple, who were very friendly and were just getting into Chris Isaak, as well at a trio of friends who seemed to attend a lot of concerts.

An example of my mad concert pichur taking skillzzz.
The show was amazing. I've never been disappointed. These guys tour fairly continually, are great showmen and outstanding musicians. I mean, to me Chris Isaak has one of the most beautiful voices going. His band, the Silvertones, consists of guitarist Hershel Yatovitz, bassist Roly Salley, and drummer Kenny Dale Johnson, along with keyboardist Scotty Plunkett, and Rafael Padilla (King of the Congas). The set was a mix of their catalog, with a focus on their most current album, which features their versions of classic Sun Records recordings. As we'd hoped, Chris Isaak did his thing where during one song he comes way, way out into the audience. Ceku, the ticketmaster, always tries to get us aisle seats with a guess to where he might come up. This time he was really close! That was pretty thrilling :)  They put on a nice long show...close to a full 2 hours. Ah, heaven.

After the show, we got some coffee samples and walked to the car. Ceku didn't want us in the car with rogue beverages. She does have a very fancy car! We decided to kill some time by walking toward where we could see the tour bus parked. We thought maybe we would be able to see some of the band members heading out. So, we stood at this little fence with a few other people and stared. Then we thought we saw Hershel.."Is that Hershel? I think it is! Oh my gawd!" He came along pulling his little rolling suitcase toward the bus. Some of the people along the fence started calling to him and we were so surprised when he came over! He hugged these two women standing next to us..."Nice to see you guys again. Oh yes, we'll be there tomorrow too, front row!" Who are these people??? Well, obviously people with plenty of time, money, and a love for good music. He didn't really stop to talk to us, but we still said hi as he trundled past us :) Next thing we know we see Kenny coming along with his little rolling suitcase! He was trailed by Chris himself, who apparently is not required to tote his own rolley bag :)  Kenny came right over to the fence and said, "Oh, I guess I'll start over here at the front..." So we watched as he made his way along the fence, stopping to talk to people. Again, special love for the lucky groupies next to us. He did stop to talk to Ceku and I, asking us where we'd come from and mentioning that he was going home Friday. I said it seemed like they didn't get home often and he said he hadn't been there since June 27. He was really lovely and cordial....and out of the corner of our eyes, we were watching to see it our true love, Chris, would talk to everyone or only the specials. Kenny moved on down the line and suddenly there was Chris Isaak right in front of us. I shook his hand and gazed at his pretty eyes and his boxer's nose. His attention moved right to my lovely friend Ceku. She a beautiful woman AND she had this picture of her dog Zadie on her phone! She began talking about her dog and asking about his old dog, who is apparently called Rodney. They hit it off over their mutual love of dogs! I stood there all duh...the Ceku asked me to take their picture and thrust her iPhone at me. Big mistake.

Hand me those touch screen things and I get all Clem Kaddiddlehoppered out...what's this here thing do? Oh noes, my fingers done sent this onta that wrong screen!

I tried and somehow I was on video and couldn't get back to photographs...finally Ceku grabbed the phone and took the photo herself. It was a bit blurry, but there is only so long you can hold up a superstar for a photo, hear me?  We thanked Chris again, told him we loved the show and off he went. It would have been a perfect moment if I wouldn't have been so clumsy :)

Back to the car all breathless. We were so excited. I could tell Ceku was a bit pissed about the lost photo opportunity...all I could do was apologize. Today I sent her a link to a way you can extract a still from a video. The video is actually funny. You can see them with their faces together and my dumb voice going "Did I get it?" I think you hear Chris saying something like, "She's texting this to your mom." So it wasn't a total loss.

All in all, it was a great evening with a very unexpected ending. I can't wait until our next Chris Isaak and the Silvertones event.

Vacation Destination

Choose and Defend! It is time to Choose and Defend! That is what we do on Wednesday and today is no exception.  I have some time off coming up soon. Although I won't be able to take an actual traveling vacation, I am happy to have some time off. If I could travel though...oh, the places I'd go! haha! Just fund me and I'm off :-D

So, let's take an imaginary vacation and decide where to go.  I did a little search to find some top vacation destinations and narrowed it down, as always, to two choices.  Where would you Choose to go on your vacation? Why? Even if one of these wouldn't be your first choice, please play along. In comments, you can always expand on your defense to include your number one pick.

Paris, France
OR

Rome, Italy

What is your vacation destination? Choose and Defend!

Does He Ever Get the Girl?

One of our longtime Saturday Scavenger Shooters was so PUZZLED by last week's word that she had to make this week's word...what else....PUZZLED!   Many thanks to the lovely Tara @ Eclectic Spaghetti for another fun challenge!

I am PUZZLED about many things as I bumble my way through life. Surely there are some puzzles which will never be solved, such as...

Why is this as far as my daughter can get when replacing a role of toilet paper? In many ways she is a pretty competent person. Why? Why? Why? I am PUZZLED.

And how do I get any work done at this desk? I assure you that I do. How? How? How? We are all PUZZLED.

I hope you sail through the rest of your weekend unPUZZLED by the things that come your way.  If life is indeed a puzzle, I am sure that you guys have the brains and intuition to put it together and create a fabulous picture!

Friday 5 - Five Shades of Teal

I stopped in over at Eclectic Spaghetti and saw that Tara had done this week's Friday 5.  So I decided , hey, why not? It is always fun to think about color and its role in the beautiful rainbow of your life. Or, like, it is cool to kill time, eh?

1.How many teal-colored items of clothing do you have, and which is your favorite? I am fairly certain I don't have a single item of teal-colored clothing. I tend towards, black, grey, brown and an occasional bright primary in my wardrobe.  DR has a tee that I think would be teal. So I will call that my favorite :)

2.There aren’t many teal-colored foods, but what comes pretty close and how do you feel about it? The only thing that comes right to mind is some kinds of children's punch drinks that are uncomfortably close to teal. haha! It is an odd food color. But those sugary drinks are good in a pinch for a little sugar bump and/or hydration...even when oddly colored.

3.If yellow is the color of cowardice, green the color of envy, and blue the color of sadness, what’s teal the color of?  Teal is the color of cowvyness. Wait, that's not an emotion! Okay...teal is the color of summer dreams. Which is not quite an emotion...but close enough.

4.What’s the neatest teal-colored thing you’ve seen recently? The teal I've seen most recently is only in my mind as I write this post. It is the color of tropical waters. So neat :-D

5.If you had to paint one of the rooms in your house teal, which would it be?  It would have to be the bathroom. Teal would be a challenge as the main color in a room. I'd think of it more as an accent. But I guess the bathroom would make the most sense. I'd do a white, light yellow, or possibly light pink shower curtain and go on from there...

Hope you enjoyed my teal musings. Please feel free to comment about teal or anything else your little heart desires. And come back tomorrow to be PUZZLED by my Saturday Scavenger Shots.

I Like the Way You Move

For this Choose and Defend Wednesday, I'd like to give you another gift. But as always, you must make a choice. And, as always, I humbly request that you make an argument for why your choice is the right one for you! So I ask you...if you could control something, what would it be?

In the Red Villa With You

My goodness. Here it is, late Monday afternoon and I am finally getting around to posting my Saturday Scavenger Shots. I should have had that loaded up in my scheduled queue, yet I did not. So here I am today, dragging on in. The word for the week was EXCLUSIVE. It was chosen by me for no good reason. Just trying to come up with something different I suppose. Also, I had this program I was presenting on Saturday on my mind. It was called Evening Extravaganza Exclusively for Tweens and it went very well. But it was a VERY busy day. And Sunday turned busy as well. Fambly celebrating and all that.

In any event, I found this word difficult and have no one to blame but me own self :)

Hows about this?

Here is a picture that I actually did not take, although my dancing bear figure does appear. This is from my Twinkle Twinkle Toddler Time last Tuesday evening. We were playing our instruments and having a bit of a march around the room. It is like we have formed our own very EXCLUSIVE band.

haha! A stretch, but what are you going to do? I have chosen this EXCLUSIVE shot of this EXCLUSIVE moment in time and I guess it will have to do.

Haven't heard from Tara so far, but I am going to try and tag her for this next week's word. Taaaaraaa!

Thanks all for stopping in to my EXCLUSIVE Saturday Scavenger Shot, Monday edition.

You're Not Her Buttercup

Here I am again with a Choose and Defend Wednesday post. Hoping this one is more pleasing as lately I can't seem to hit upon anything engaging.   Today you are going to receive something...a gift, if you will. And you get to Choose which gift you shall receive.  Then you get to Defend your choice. It is fun!

So, would you rather be given -

The Answer to One Big Question
OR

One Wish Granted

Think it over. Weigh your options. Choose and Defend!  Thank you :)

I Was So Hard to Please

PROGRESSIVE. Way to choose a very challenging Saturday Scavenger Shots word Jasen (AlienCG) @ Swamp Gas & Moonlit Reflections!  Not to say I don't appreciate a good challenge...I certainly do. Still I feel my entry here will be a bit lame.

I think my politics are fairly PROGRESSIVE, but I didn't really know a good way to show that in a photo.  Then I just decided to think of the word in the way of just...something moving forward. That felt a little easier, because there is certainly something moving forward for all of us, whether we want it to or not!

Time. It is PROGRESSIVE. Just rolling along.

So, ya know, that is what I got this week. I thank Jasen again for the great word, the great challenge. Wish I wasn't so uncreative. But I am here and playing the game, because it is good and it is right :)

Thanks for stopping by. Please feel free to post your own PROGRESSIVE photos. Why not?

Friday 5 - Versatility

I haven't done a Friday 5 in quite some time!  Today I thought - Hey. Why not do a Friday 5? So here I am...with your Friday 5.

1. Among people you know, who has the most diverse range of talents or abilities?  Not sure how much credibility I will have with this answer, but the truth is that DR is one of the most diversely talented people I know! I am always surprised (and a little jealous) at how good he is at everything he tries. I could go on and on about his many talents :)

2. Besides its intended use, what are three things you’ve used a paperclip for? Oh goodness. Well. Nothing about this is going to make me look attractive. I've used them as toothpicks, to clean under my fingernails, and as impromptu office jewelry.  I am such a sexy beast, ain't I!

3. What item in your pantry is the most versatile?  I guess beyond the basic spices and things like maybe flour and sugar, I'd have to go with pasta. It is quick and can be dressed up or down in a variety of ways. And I loves me some carbs.

4. What implement related to your work seems to be the most useful in different ways?  Can I say the books? Can they be considered implements related to my work? Oh, why not....sure. I'm going with books. They are useful for education, enlightenment, entertainment, and escape. They can also be used as paperweights, doorstops, and to make you look smart when piled on your desk ;-)

5. What’s an item in your home that seems to have one (and only one!) use?  Although I know this item could be use for other things, so far I have only used my melon baller to, uh...you know...ball melons. Yes.

Thanks for sharing Friday and its 5 with me.  Feel encouraged to participate in comments or on your own blog.  Please stop by tomorrow for a PROGRESSIVE Saturday Scavenger Shots... and may your weekend be wonderful in a great variety of ways!

Stop! Collaborate and Listen!

Hey all you hotties on this hot, hot Wednesday. Due to the heat and my fried brain you shall have another simple foody type of Choose and Defend for this week. I am feeling so tired and overwhelmed, which is not unusual at this time of year. Perhaps this Choose and Defend Wednesday will cool us all down and cheer us all (or me) up :)

This week, there are two large chains offering a free beverage for a very limited time. If you could only have one of them, which would you Choose and why? Defend your choice!  Would you get...

7-Eleven Slurpee
OR

Starbucks Refresher

Aaahhh! Cool!  Don't mean to be a corporate shill or anything. It's just nice to get free things. FYI - 7-Eleven is giving away free Slurpees from 11am-7pm today (Wed. 7/11) and Starbucks is giving away free Refreshers from noon-3pm this Friday (7/13).  So for reals, get both....but for HERE Choose and Defend!!!!!

Friday I'm in Love

Did you guys have a good weekend? Mine was a'ight. I was off on Friday, so I went with DR to visit with his mom and sister. We ended up going to Newport Beach for lunch and some walkabout. DR's sister kindly treated us all to lunch...eating out is a rare treat these days! After lunch we walked down the pier. Here is what we saw -

That pelican had a whole scam going with the fishermen.  He probably hasn't caught his own fish in ages :)  He would even let people pet his head...but I still didn't care to get close enough to do that.

I love looking out at the ocean. There is something very soothing about it. This is not to say that I would enjoy being out at sea with nothing but water all around me. That doesn't seem soothing at all! But looking out from dry land, yeah, that is good.

I enjoy being around DR and his family together. They seem very close, which is nice. His sister has one of those challenging marriages and they all seem inordinately annoyed all the time with the youngest boy in the family....but aside from that I am very comfortable around them.

Anyway, that was a fine, fine day! I'm keeping that one on the books :)

Don't Play Rough

It is a busy Saturday, but I wouldn't want to miss out on Saturday Scavenger Shots! This week's word is FLIMSY and it was chosen by Silly Rabbit @ Down Silly Rabbit's Hole.  I am not a well to do sort, so plenty of what I have purchased over the years has turned out to be pretty FLIMSY. Yet, how best to illustrate this word?  I decided to go with our little stage set at work. One of my very talented co-workers set up these decorative fronts for the Information Desk and the Prize Desks here in the Children's Room for our Summer Reading Program. The theme is Dream Big - Read!

Here is the Information Services Desk / Bed. Paper is rather FLIMSY, but it looks pretty cool.

Here are the Prize Desks. The bigger one is for babies through kids entering 3rd grade. The smaller one is for 4th-8th graders. Both are a popular library destination during the Summer Reading Program.  FLIMSY, yet powerful! :)

The effect is very nice and people are impressed and excited when they enter the room. Yet really, these little structures are quite FLIMSY. Several mornings I have come in to find pieces that have come loose or collapsed onto the floor. But they can be repaired and live to look super for another day...or....three more weeks at this point :)

I hope you are all having a nice sturdy Saturday and that the only thing FLIMSY is your little warm weather outfit!  Thanks for stopping by and we will see who Silly Rabbit chooses to pick the next word for Saturday Scavenger Shots...

Stuff Yo Face for Freedom!

Thought I'd put up a quick little Independence Day Choose and Defend. It is still just Wednesday in the rest of the world after all :)

Today's Choose and Defend involves food...because that is always fun. Before the big fireworks show tonight, you might want to have a barbeque. If you could only serve one of these traditional favorites which would you Choose?

Hamburgers
OR

Hot Dogs

Of course, along with either hamburgers or hot dogs, you may have as many side dishes as you like! That should be some consolation. Feel free to mention anything you'd like at your dream BBQ....as long as it doesn't include both hamburgers and hot dogs :)  Because this is Choose and Defend Wednesday!

Thanks for stopping by...Happy 4th!

The Stars Are Gonna Shine On You

Let me start this Saturday Scavenger Shots post by saying that I really had no idea how to visually portray this week's word. Don't get me wrong...I love the challenge and the word is great!  Chosen by Tara @ Eclectic Spaghetti, this week's word is TURBULENCE.

I had to think about TURBULENCE as it occurs in my life. As I thought it over, I realized that strong emotions are what cause the TURBULENCE in my heart, mind, and body.  So, please enjoy some photos of the people most likely to get me all agitated and such -

The Trio of Terror, my darling grands, are quite capable of causing TURBULENCE wherever they may go.

My youngest children. The Terrible Twosome. They are growing up fast, but still know how to push my buttons and get the TURBULENCE going for me.

Then there is this one...my own DR. Makes my heart all thumpy...good TURBULENCE.

Thanks for stopping in and risking all the bumps and jolts that go along with TURBULENCE! I hope your weekend and the week ahead are all clear skies and smooth sailing :)

And I Mustn't Give In

Hello Wednesday and hello kind readers stopping by. Looks like it is time for some Choose and Defend Wednesday. I think this one is going to be very tough! It is good to be challenged though, right?  Remember, just make a choice and, if you can, comment on why you made that choice...Choose and Defend.

Would you rather...

Lose All Your Past Memories
OR

Be Unable to Form New Memories
Honestly? This one is kind of painful to even contemplate. There isn't a GOOD choice is there? But sometimes, that is just how it goes.  Give it some thought and then, please, Choose and Defend!

Half a Weekend

This was my Saturday at work. The patrons were on a library ramage.

This was my Sunday at home. Aaaahhhhh! I'm grateful for Sundays and the rest they very often bring.

Okay week...let's go!

Yes, You Behind the Bike Shed...

Many thanks to our good blogging friend Jasen @ Swamp Gas & Moonlit Reflections for choosing this week's Saturday Scavenger Shots word. The word? BRICK.
We all know about using BRICK as a building material. Who didn't learn at an early age that it was far superior to straw or sticks? And we all know that society has made us just another BRICK in the wall. There is an English expression about being "as thick as a BRICK" and an American one about being built like "a BRICK shit house". Neither of which sound very flattering, although one is meant to be.

For my BRICK shot, I stopped this morning on my way to work for this quick BRICK pic :)

This is some kind industrial building. I love BRICK as an accent or for walkways, chimneys, even a little wall...but a whole BRICK building can be sort of....too much. But there is also something pretty about BRICK, especially as it ages.

Thanks for stopping by for my Saturday Scavenger Shot. Hope your weekend is BRICK-tastic!

And They Print You On Their Shoulder

Choose and Defend Wednesday is here and so are we, apparently :) Hi.  This morning, as I was driving to work, I was having some sort of very specific childhood memory. It actually made me feel a bit weepy...which is not so unusual. I'm a rather emotional person. In any event, it gave me the idea for today's Choose and Defend.

Some of you are parents, as I am, and I know you don't classify your children...I mean, I don't think as a rule people intend to do that to their children. But when you were a child, didn't you ever feel like you were filling some sort of niche or quota? I'm sure it is different in different families...there are probably endless combinations of how kids are characterized. But since this is Choose and Defend we must narrow things down to simple this or that.

So, with that said....which child were you?

The Pretty / Handsome One

OR

The Smart / Capable One

Maybe your parents made you feel that you were all of the above. I'm sure we all aim for that. But did you sometimes feel that compared to your siblings you were more one than the other? If you are an only child it might be harder to parse it out....but you can surely give it a shot!

Choose and Defend. It's the right thing to do.

Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right, Here I Am...

Happy Birthday to my middliest kid, Cory Social Animal! He's now 23 and that makes me...old :-D
What a great man he's become. He is compassionate, loyal, lives in the moment, acts for the future...what more could a mother ask?

Social Animal, Handsome Lad and Little Prince strike a spiky-haired pose.

Vinegar Tears, Salt in My Wounds

Hello Mr. CHIPS. And others :) The word for this Saturday Scavenger Shots is, indeed, CHIPS! I choose this word because I thought it could be used in a lot of different ways. CHIPS in your nail polish...CHIPS in your armor (or is that chinks?)...poker CHIPS...and of course many food types of CHIPS!

Well, the ideas for different types of CHIPS may be myriad, but my photo taking opportunities are not. So you will take what you get and like it! Or um, you know....not.  Okay then.  Here -

Here are my potahtoh CHIPS. They are salt & vinegar flavor because, aside from maybe barbeque, this is the best flavor for CHIPS.  So it is written and so it shall be.

I'm sure I don't even have to tell you that I did not actually take this picture of mint n' CHIP ice cream with chocolate sauce. Way too clear, way too nice.  But when I thought of a CHIPS post without my favorite dessert included I wanted to sob. For reals. So I hunted this down with my own two hands and my own two eyes and put it here on my blog for us all to enjoy.

So, that is my CHIPS post. Would anyone reading like to assign a word for next week? If so, please leave a comment. You don't even have to participate in posting if you don't care to...although of course all are welcome to do so! But if you just want to give us an assignment, that would be great and appreciated. Me and Tara get tired of thinking of words...exhausting....

Have a good rest of the weekend now. Goodbye Mr. CHIPS. And others.

I Will Always Be Weird Inside

Hey there daddy-os and lil mamas. Since Father's Day is this Sunday, I thought I'd do a Choose and Defend Wednesday in their honor. There are lots of polls out there right now about "Favorite TV Dad" so I looked at some of those to see what dads came up a lot. Among the favorites are Cliff Huxtable, Mike Brady, Homer Simpson, and in more recent shows, all the dads on Modern Family. All fine choices. Yet, I want to do something a little different. So....I decided to go with a choice between two vastly different father characters played by one of my favorite actors, Bryan Cranston. And I won't ask you who you'd want for a father...I will ask you to choose which father you'd prefer to be! You don't have to be a father or even a dude to answer this, of course. Just open your mind and Choose and Defend!

Hal from Malcolm in the Middle
OR

Walter White from Breaking Bad

Even if you haven't watched either of these shows, you have probably gotten the gist from cultural osmosis or something, right? So which crazy paterfamilias will you Choose? And how will you Defend yourself? Let's find out....Choose and Defend!

With My Big Foot On the Gas

Hold me and tell me it will be alright. Summer is upon me at work and it gets so, so, so busy that sometimes I feel overwhelmed. Yet given that I've gotten through it for the past 14 years or so I must assume I can make it through another SRP :)

At least I do have days off to look forward to! This past Sunday was a lot of fun. DR and I went to a concert. As I've mentioned, I really love live music. This show was at The Greek, which is a wonderful venue. Not too far, not too large, outdoors...all good. We went to see a band DR likes called Chickenfoot. I don't really know their music very well, althought DR had shown me one of their videos a few weeks ago.

Chickenfoot, left to right - Kenny Aronoff, Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, and Joe Santarini

The opening act was called Black Stone Cherry. I also knew nothing about them, but they were younger guys; quite fun and energetic in their set.  The crowd was kind of still milling around and walking in when they played, but I think people enjoyed them.

It was cool to see the kind of people who came out. Lots of people our age, old Van Halen fans and such.  The badass dad crowd...old groupie type girls....and some people brought their kids.  While Chickenfoot played the crowd never sat down. Everyone was on their feet the entire time.  Well, we were in the front row of the last section and their were some people behind us complaining, but that was their problem! Even though I didn't know the songs, I had a good time. There is something about that kind of concert that made me feel like the good girl I once was out on a date with her cute rocker boyfriend. I'm such a dork.

I hope you had a good weekend as well. I also hope that your week is less crazy-making than mine promises to be.

For those interested, this week's Saturday Scavenger Shots word is CHIPS. Come on and show me what you're working with :) Oh, and come by tomorrow for some Choose and Defend! Okay.

I'll Be Upon You By the Moonlight Side

Either Tara's Saturday Scavenger Shots word fits in great with my Choose and Defend Wednesday or vice versa. Either way, we gots ourselves a mini-theme a cookin'. Yup.  For what is more of a first-to-mind nocturnal animal than the WOLF?  Howling at the moon anyone?

The WOLF is the popular subject of t-shirts, tattoos, and blacklight posters. Somehow he got co-opted as some sort of symbol of badass mystic vibrations or whatever.  Surely each of my kids has owned a mystical Native American/WOLF t-shirt...and my ex has a WOLF tattoo on one arm, glowing green eyes and all.  In spite of this, I have no photographic evidence of any of these things!

This is what I have instead -

You are looking at 75 purple paper wolves howling at 75 yellow paper moons.
I happened to have this on hand for a storytime craft for this summer.
That is the kind of WOLF you get from laura b. today :)

And there you go! So, now you can spend the weekend howling at the moon and avoiding any fearsome wereWOLF types that may accost you. Sure, theWereWOLF of London's hair was perfect, but he'll rip your lungs out!  Ahhhhoooooo!

Searching in the Darkness

Hello to everyone who has made it to Wednesday. I feel like it should be Friday by now. At least I have Choose and Defend Wednesday to console me.  This week's choice came to me in a dream. Well, that is not quite true. The theme of this year's Summer Reading Program is "Dream Big - Read!" So as we've spent the past months preparing, I have had nocturnal sorts of things on the brain.  This brings me (finally!) to this week's Choose and Defend.

There are lots of nocturnal animals, as it turns out. I didn't even know how many until I did some lazy research.  I thought I'd ask what your favorite is. Since this is Choose and Defend, I had to narrow it down to just a couple...so I chose ones many of us might actually come into contact with sometimes.  So....which of these is your favorite creature of the night...and why?

Bats
OR

Raccoons

Come out and dance in the pale moonlight!  Choose and Defend! And keep on keeping on until there is time for some rest :)

Someone Else to Miss

Just wanted to take a moment to note the passing of one of my collegues. Jackie has worked at this library for the past 28 years. Just recently she was promoted to Director and was doing a very good job in these trying times. Being the Director is a very political position and she handled it beautifully for such a naturally subversive sort of person. She had appeared to be in good health and had even lost weight over the past couple of years. But on Wednesday, May 30, she suffered a massive heart attack while sitting at her desk in her office. Help arrived within five minutes and she was in the best hands. Unfortunately, she never regained consciousness. She died on Saturday morning.

It was quite a shock to everyone here at the library and amongst all of the city staff. Jackie was only 63 and had much to look forward to. Her family will miss her terribly, of course...and so will we, her friends and co-workers.  I have so many memories of her. We started out on the wrong foot, I'd say. She could be a bit sharp and sarcastic, so when I first began working here I felt that she didn't like me. In a rare brave move I went to her office to try and clear things up. She was rather horrified to learn I felt we had a problem and quickly hugged me and assured me that we were great. In the years since then we have worked on several projects together. Most recently, I have been her steady supplier of  posters for the Foreign Film Evenings that she hosted here for the patrons.  After that first misstep we always got along....I'd say a bit of birds of a feather thing, really.

I don't know what happens after people die. But I do know that Jackie lives on in our hearts and minds. She lives in the legacy she left here with her work. Anytime I read a book about zombies or vampires, both of which she loved, I will definitely think of Jackie.

Rest in Peace Jackie.

Your Life is a Six-Lane Highway to Nowhere

Today's Saturday Scavenger Shots word is ZERO. I am the hero who chose it :) As usual, I clearly didn't have anything in mind when I came up with it. I just thought...well, it's a cool Z word...nothing is nothing...and yet nothing is somewhat mysterious too!  So here we are a week later, pondering ZERO.

Here is what I cobbled together.

I found this little book called "The History of ZERO".  Apparently, the Babylonians invented ZERO when they devised a symbol that was a placeholder. Their ZERO looks more like a pair of little flags standing side by side. But it was still ZERO. You go Babylonians!  ZERO had to be invented a second time around 500 A.D in the Hindu system of mathematics. The history of ZERO is actually pretty interesting. You know, if you're into that sort of thing. It is hard to imagine life without ZERO now. What would life be without nothing? Wait, what?

So, uh, as you can see, this Saturday Scavenger Shots turned out to be more of a little lesson in mathematics than a series of awesome photos (which I very seldom achieve, in any event!)  Just remember...nothing from nothing leaves nothing. You gotta have something, if you wanna be with me. So sayeth Billy Preston and so it shall be.

Friday 5 - Similes

A Friday afternoon at work is like one of those slo-mo shots of Lee Majors running Six Million Dollar Man style. You are on the way somewhere you really want to be...but it feels like it is taking forever to get there! Thank Friday 5 for my similicious frame of mind. Let's see what I can do with these gems.

1. In what way is Tabasco like love?  Tabasco is like love because it gets your attention, makes things delicious, and sometimes it can hurt.

2. In what way is the beach like school?  The beach is like school because while there is a focus for your attentions, there are plenty of distractions compromising that focus.

3. In what way is the sky like your heart?  The sky is like my heart because no matter whether it is dark and turbulant or clear and bright, it is still the same place, fundamentally.

4.  In what way is your family like a box full of toys?  Some of them are colorful, some of them are cuddly, some of them are educational, some of them are a little dangerous, but they are all loved...my family and that box of toys.

5.  In what way is a cookbook like your ambitions?  In my particular case a cookbook is most like my ambitions in that they are both things that I don't consider all that often.

Okay...Happy Weekend everyone! Hope your weekend is like a....um....fluffy, playful kitten! Or something. I don't know. Hush.
