The Sound of Music... and Bad Singing

During this heat wave, I got a nice Alpine reprieve this past Saturday evening.  Let's talk about it on this hot Talk Talk Tuesday, okay?   Okay, so on Saturday evening Milly and I went to the Hollywood Bowl for a Sound of Music sing-a-long.  I had never been to one before and was really excited to go.

We parked in Pasadena and took the bus to the Bowl.  The show was sold out and they pack you in like sardines there on the bench seating up top :-)  There was a very long costume parade.  Some of the costumes were incredibly clever and some were incredibly lame...but at least they tried.  We didn't dress up!  The winner was this tiny girl who looked like a butterscotch kiss..she was 'ray, a drop of golden sun'.   When it got dark, around 7:30 or so, they began the movie.  They gave us some participation props and many people brought additional ones of their own.  Think of something like Rocky Horror Picture Show, where everyone talks back to the movie.  It was a lot of fun and they provided the lyrics on screen so that even if you didn't know all the Sound of Music songs by heart you could sing along.  I love singing, but am horrible at it.  Fortunately, in a crowd of 17,000 or so, it doesn't really matter how you sound.

I actually hadn't seen the movie in quite awhile, so it was good to see it again.  It really is quite sweet for a story featuring Nazis.  I always forget how killingly handsome Georg von Trapp is :-)   And the cell phone lit versions of Edelweiss were surprisingly beautiful and rather moving.  I was trying to decide what to Talk Talk about and since I need good thoughts, how about My Favorite Things?
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things
-Favorite Things by Rodgers and Hammerstein

Now, you know what to do!  What are some of YOUR favorite things?  What do you think about when you're feeling bad?  Talk Talk!

I wish we had more of those events in my town, I would be there in a heartbeat! I went to a movie last year on the eastside with some friends to see "Clue". Same thing - we could talk back to the movie and people dressed in costumes. There was even a theater troupe that acted out the movie in the front of the theater.

Anyway, usually when I'm down I go right to a comedy - either one of the comedies I have in stock or I go to YouTube and check out Seinfeld outtakes or any of the other things on there that make me laugh.

That sounds like a lot of fun.

Red wine and chocolate and time with my kiddos
Oceans and mountains and picnics in meadows
Hot summer sex and the the joy that love brings
These are a few of my favorite things

A cool summer evening and a clear sky above. A freshly charged camera and someone I love. A tall glass of iced tea and donuts with jelly filling. These are a few of my favorite things.

Wow, I would so love that. I sing anyway when it's on tv. I worked at the Hollywood Bowl one summer - it was great.

Tara: Now that I have been to one I definitely want to go again. I heard they do a Grease sing-a-long!

I like your method of dealing with being down...there is nothing like those funny moments on the screen where you can just forget things and have a laugh.

Secret: I love it! I am singing your verse and it is definitely making me smile :-)

AlienCG: I think those are a few of my favorite things too! Very nice.

MrManuel: Not a fan of the musical, eh? haha!

NoRegrets: Seems like I used to see The Sound of Music quite regularly, but it had been years. It was great to sing those songs again :-)
I bet working at the Hollywood Bowl would be really interesting. All those different events and people.

Churlita: There is nothing better than love! Love isn't always easy, but it is always one of my favorite things :-)
